1) Hire a Professional – Amateur looking photos will only get you amateur work, so if you want to be a professional then start by looking the part. There is a large amateur market, and if this is your thing, then by all means use those web cam shots you’ve been saving. But if you want real jobs for commercial clients, then keep those fuzzy snapshots at home in the family album. 2) Have Honest Photos – It’s a bad sign if every time you show up to a shoot the photographer doesn’t recognize you. Photoshop is a great tool for removing a pimple or a bruise, but don’t perform a digital extreme makeover on yourself. 3) Show Your Experience – If your resume says you’ve shot with a swimwear company or done a runway show, then prove it. Tearsheets and event photos go a long way in giving your resume credibility. Anyone can fluff their experience, but few have the photos to back it up. 4) Be Diverse – Have a variety of photos that show your face and body. Views from all angles, profiles, back and front, hair up, hair down, smiling, serious, glamorous, natural… you don’t have to pigeonhole yourself into just one look. The more diverse your portfolio, the more diverse the work offers will be. But don’t get too scattered to where you just have a mishmash of strange photos with no resemblance to you at all. 5) Keep it Updated – Keep your portfolio current! Even if you think you look the same as you did five years ago, chances are something has changed. Clients want to see photos taken in the last six months or less. If you have been shooting, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to update. If your hair is shorter, longer, a different color, or you’ve gained weight, lost weight, changed your look in any way, then your portfolio needs to reflect that. Weed out the photos that don’t look like you do right now. This also falls under the rule of having honest photos. To Sum up, just always use your best recent photos. Show your diversity and show yourself, and you’ll show the client you’re the right model for the job. By: Candy Keane Comments?
