"So you want to compete in Fitness/Ms. Bikini America"

By: Tisha Rodrigues
Have you ever watched The Fitness America Pageant on TV and sat there in awe at the amazing talent sumbersaulting across the stage as you ask your significant other to pass the cheese curls? You are either saying to yourself, "Hek, I can do that, I've taken a gymnastics class or two or Wow I wish I could do that in a moderately jealous tone.

Well, I compete in figure. Figure is a little different from that, see there is no routine segment in a figure competition. So, for all the ladies out there with no gymnastics background, like myself or zero coordination. You still have the chance to strut your stuff! The first round in a figure competition is the swimsuit round, where judges are scoring you on overall beauty, skin coloring, symmetry and muscle tone. You do not want to come in looking like "ZENA" warrior princess for figure. You need to have a great shape and good definition without being too built nor too lean. Some competitions may include a "sportswear" round. Where you will choose an outfit with a particular theme relating to fitness and or sports. You want to look cute and sporty in this round versus the swimsuit round where you need to Glam up from head to toe. Including perfect hair, makeup, suit color and selection, manicured fingers and toes and don't forget your fancy shoes!

I won't get technical here with scoring because it may vary from federation to federation and competition to competition, but if you make the top 5, you will also have an interview round which will basically be questions based on your fitness goals or role models in the fitness world. From this they place these 5 ladies and one lucky gal is dubbed Ms. Bikini America. The biggest mistake most new girls who want to begin competing make is not researching enough and they go into the competition as if it were a "Bikini Contest" There is much more involved here.

1) being dark enough (you must apply competition color, best suited for you) If not, the stage lights are so bright and will drown your butt right off the stage!
2) A competition swimsuit (not the bikini you wear to the beach)
*I will be starting my own line soon which will be available on my website.
3) A pre-contest diet. This is SO important. Fitness and Figure girls work out about 5 or more times per week along with two 1 hour cardio sessions per day to prepare for contest. This is what we do Eat, sleep and breathe Fitness. You must carefully monitor all of the protein, fat, carbs and calories you are taking into your body. This would be a good time to consult with a nutrition consultant www.finneganfitness.com or www.savagechoreography.comEveryone is different and everyBODY need their own diet plan that is going to work especially for them.
4) Shoes..Most girls wear 5-6 inch heels for this and we stand on stage and backstage sometimes for hours! If you are not comfortable in heels and you want to compete, this is also a good time to start practicing!
5) Find the right federation for you.
6) It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun, I know I am having a Blast! Making new friends, traveling and watching all the extraordinary talent on stage. It is a wonderful experience.

If you are seriously interested in competing in Figure and or Fitness I can supply you with many resources to help get you started. Everything you need to prepare for your first contest from A-Z. Please feel free to contact me regarding any additional information you may need regarding this column.

I love what I do, I wish I would have got involved with fitness much earlier. So many great opportunities have come my way through this amazing adventure. Don't be the person on the sidelines, what do you have to lose? You have to be YOUR biggest fan! Good Luck.
